Ed Brooke is elected Massachusetts attorney general.

The first African-American to win state-wide office in Massachusetts, he is also the first African-American state attorney general in the U.S. In Boston, Brooke (R) receives 95,129 votes while Francis Kelly (D) receives 123,032. Brooke subsequently tells the Boston Globe that he was “Attorney General first, Negro second.”
